It's said in the manga that, having seen a great many atrocities at the end of the second ninja war, Itachi had the wisdom of a Hokage (the leaders of their village) by the age of seven. While this may be a bit of a stretch, it's true that he's always been mature beyond his years, as seen by how quickly he progressed through the ranks. He was aware of the dark nature inherent in his clan and the eye techniques they inherited and actually feared for the safety of the whole village because of this. He was more capable of seeing the bigger picture.

Unfortunately it was also because of this that he ended up getting drawn into the situation that he did. In the end, he chose the safety of the entire village over that of his clan, and thus was instrumental in the latter's demise.

He loved his brother more than anything, which is why his condition for murdering his own kin was that Sasuke alone got to live. He thought that by filling his brother with hatred for him that he could become the villain and their family's name wouldn't be tarnished in his eyes. Once Sasuke completed his revenge, he would return to the village and start the clan anew. He needed his death to be at the hands of an Uchiha after everything he'd done.

Itachi is a selfless individual who believes in sacrificing for the greater good. Shisui, a member of his clan he was particularly close to, taught him what he considers to be the true mark of a ninja - that they don't seek glory, but instead protect from the shadows. He was willing to do what he did because he was convinced that more suffering would happen if he didn't. He accepted being seen as the villain because it meant that the name of his clan remained untarnished - that his brother could still remember them with pride.

Later, past the canon point I'm taking him from, he would admit to having made some mistakes in dealing with Sasuke. He took everything into his own hands and didn't trust others to help him see it through. He took every precaution imaginable, but in the end his method was based around shallow lies that were easily later uncovered and he had no one to back him up should something go wrong. He blames this decision on arrogance, and the belief that he was strong enough to handle anything. Itachi warns Naruto, when it appears as though the boy is trying to take everything on his own shoulders as well, that this path will only lead to failure, and that he should rely on those who believe in him to help as well. (Note that he doesn't then immediately take this advice himself.)

Realizing that this setting is real is going to be a difficult hurdle for Itachi to deal with. He had expected, at this point in time, to run off to Akatsuki and work his way into their ranks. He will be unaware that anyone knows of what really happened, and will still act on the notion that Sasuke needs to hate him.

Soft spoken, Itachi is also very cold personality-wise - to both enemies and "comrades" alike. Even if he's a pacifist deep down, he will shove that part of his nature aside in order to wear the mask he's made for himself and complete the tasks he's given. Should his brother reveal what he knows about him, that mask will crack and he'll be left (at least at first) uncertain about how to move ahead with his plans.

He has very few hobbies outside of training, as he just didn't have time for them. The official stat books says he enjoys visiting confectioneries. I play him as a vegetarian, as it makes sense for his character and his favorite/least favorite foods also make it a strong possibility.

The differences between Itachi at 13 and the one we see later seem small, especially before we know what really happened, but there are noticeable ones. While he found the need to begin spinning lies around himself early on, at first they're less outright lies and more just leaving things out or not going into full detail. He's untruthful more to his parents than his brother. By the time he's in Akatsuki, he's created an entirely new persona for himself. He doesn't give much away, and he lets others come to their own conclusions a lot of the time. Some of his true self remains even then, and we see it at times when he speaks with Kisame - such as when he mentions a person coming to know himself only at his point of death.

Having murdered his whole clan, he has very little reason after that to make it look like he's suddenly grown a conscience, which means he follows orders from Akatsuki whenever necessary, even if it means killing others. He would have to justify it with how he'd set his brother up to get revenge on him later. However, he wouldn't kill needlessly, and having no organization to guide him upon entering this game, he would do a lot more bluffing than otherwise. Having not entered it yet to begin with, he won't have gotten used to the sort of tasks that would be required of him there that would have eked out a more comfortable position for him within its ranks.

The ninja is particularly strong willed, moreso than even the usual training allows for. He's also exceptionally clever, and good at planning for many possibilities in advance. Unlike others in his clan, Itachi was aware of the way emotions could impact himself and his techniques. To this end, he became quite good at sealing his own away. This doesn't mean he can't show them, of course, and his ability to control his anger means he isn't as easily trolled as some.

Itachi cares a lot, though he doesn't always show it. He's made some hard decisions involving those close to him and if need be he'll do it again in the future. At the same time, he can come across as rather detached, and isn't easy to get close to because of it. Also, as mentioned earlier, he has a tendency to want to do things on his own, not trusting others to get the results he needs or simply not wanting to involve them for their own sake. He won't be the sort of person who easily speaks out about his problems with others. It would also not be too difficult to use his love for his brother against him, once that becomes common knowledge (which it likely will).

We see rare examples of anger in him when he's younger that we don't see later on, most of which is probably derived from the situation he's found himself in and his utter lack of ability to change the way things are headed. His anger is cold, and we see it when he's approached by three other clan members when they question him about Shisui's apparent suicide. It shows that he was indeed affected by the loss of his friend, and he starts to take some of that anger out on them and his father before Sasuke notices and interrupts, causing Itachi to catch himself. Along similar lines, and though he tries to avoid it, younger Itachi is also a certain degree of arrogant. He even warns his brother at one point, saying that those who get to be in his position - seen as gifted and unable to do wrong - are often prone to it. It isn't the sort of arrogance that's brazen and in your face, but it's what kept him from seeking the help of others when it might have benefited him in the long run. He knows what he's capable of, and when he isn't capable of something he would rather find a way to get himself to that point than seek assistance.

At thirteen, and despite his many talents, he's inexperienced with many things outside of the realm of their ninja world. He's performed missions all over his nation, and probably a little beyond, but he's spent so much time training and working within this environment, that he doesn't fit as well outside of it. Casual conversation isn't necessarily awkward, but he doesn't seek it out. He can also be far more serious than some situations demand, at times. He doesn't have much of a social life and he doesn't seek one out. It will have to be forced upon him.

Staring down at his hands, Itachi's brow creased into a frown. Healing, they said his future self's powers had been. The removal of pain. But that wasn't what it was now, and the ninja wasn't sure how to feel about that.

On the one hand, he should be pleased. Healing was a positive thing. He would grow and mature into someone who could provide that for others, rather than cause nothing but the opposite. Still, wasn't that wrong? Wouldn't that be too telling of the part of him he had planned on keeping hidden? Had that facade simply been forgotten, lost to whatever bumps in the road ahead of him the future would bring? Would it even be right for him to know?

Another part of him realized that part of this was jealousy. He didn't feel that he could heal with the hands he had now. They had too much blood on them. Would have more on them still. They were far more likely to burn someone than to heal anything. The image was just too difficult to come to terms with.

What he had been given this time, that was Nara territory. The Nara clan manipulated shadows, not the Uchiha. Was there supposed to be irony in this? A twisting of the mantra he held onto so strongly? His hands clenched into fists and he lowered them slowly to his sides. Such thoughts would get him nowhere.

He would do what he could with what he'd been given, just as he always had.
